A sunken temple, narrow corridors and warning chimes: the first water level in the saga traumatized generations of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) players. The game's fourth zone, on South Island, it was originally meant to be in second place, before being pushed back for being too difficult too early. Underwater, Sonic slows down and his air supply runs out; once the countdown starts, reaching zero kills instantly, rings or no rings, unless you breathe in the bubbles from the air vents. The boss is the exception in the whole game: no fight, but a vertical escape ahead of the rising water while Eggman gets away.

Sonic 1's 4th Zone
Labyrinth Zone is the 4th zone of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), on South Island: a labyrinth of ancient ruins submerged underwater, made of stone blocks, columns, and narrow corridors. It is the very first aquatic level in the series. It was originally intended to be the 2nd zone but was pushed back, deemed too difficult too early.

Drowning, a first
Here's the innovation that left its mark: underwater, Sonic is significantly slowed down, and an invisible air supply is depleted. After a certain amount of time, chimes ring out, then a countdown begins to unsettling music — and if it reaches zero, it's instant drowning, even with rings. The salvation: breathing the air bubbles rising from the vents.

A unique boss: the escape
The boss of Labyrinth is a unique case in all of Sonic 1: there is no combat. At the end of Act 3, Eggman flees up a long vertical shaft riddled with traps, while the water rises inexorably. Sonic must climb as fast as possible to escape drowning — without ever being able to hit the doctor.
An immense legacy
The zone itself has not returned as a playable level in subsequent major installments, but its legacy is colossal: the drowning mechanic (and its jingle) has become a staple of the series, reprised and rearranged in almost all subsequent aquatic levels.
