GameSega 32XSonic Heroes
Released in 1995 on the Sega 32X add-on, Knuckles' Chaotix remains the most unusual entry in the saga: a Sonic game without Sonic. Knuckles the echidna takes on Dr. Robotnik and Metal Sonic, permanently tied to his partner by a ring and a thread of energy — an elastic link inherited from the Sonic Crackers prototype (1994). Espio, Vector and Charmy make their video game debut here before coming back in force in Sonic Heroes, alongside Mighty and the robots Heavy and Bomb. Ray, for his part, is not playable; the adventure ends on Metal Sonic Kai.
Summary
A Sonic game without Sonic, on a forgotten console, but one that gave birth to a cult group: this is Knuckles' Chaotix (1995), one of the most atypical episodes in the saga. Let's revisit this spin-off unlike any other.
🕹️ It is part of our complete list of Sonic games.
What is Knuckles' Chaotix?
Knuckles' Chaotix is a platform game released in 1995, exclusively on the Sega 32X add-on (the module that attached to the Mega Drive). Developed by Sega as a spin-off of the Sonic series, it stars Knuckles the Echidna and a group of allies against Dr. Robotnik (Eggman) and Metal Sonic.

View product →The elastic link mechanic
The main feature of the game is its elastic link ("rubber band"): two characters are permanently linked by a ring and an energy string. You have to play with this elasticity—stretching, catapulting, pulling each other—to progress. An idea inherited from an earlier prototype, Sonic Crackers (1994).
Playable characters
The game offers five main characters: Knuckles, Espio the chameleon, Vector the crocodile, Charmy the bee, and Mighty the armadillo. Two robot partners, Heavy and Bomb, complete the cast. (Note: contrary to popular belief, Ray the flying squirrel is not playable.)
🐊 The future group leader is there from the start: (re)read Vector the Crocodile.
🦎 As is the team's ninja: here's Espio the Chameleon.
🐝 And the youngest: discover Charmy Bee.
The birth of the Chaotix team
This is where it all begins for the trio who would become famous: Knuckles' Chaotix marks the first video game appearance of Espio, Vector, and Charmy—the future members of the Chaotix team, who would return in force in Sonic Heroes. Mighty, however, had already appeared two years earlier in SegaSonic the Hedgehog (arcade machine, 1993).
