GameSonic the FightersSega AM2
In 1996, Sega AM2 sent the blue hedgehog into a 3D fighting arcade cabinet running on the Model 2 system. Renamed Sonic Championship outside Japan, the game lines up eight fighters — Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Espio, Fang the Sniper, Bean and Bark — against two non-playable bosses, Metal Sonic and Dr. Eggman. It reuses the engine of Fighting Vipers and its shield mechanic, which can be destroyed or spent to switch into Hyper Mode. Bark, Bean and Honey the Cat make their debut here; the 2012 HD re-release, on PS3 and Xbox 360, finally makes Metal Sonic, Eggman and Honey playable.

The original arcade version features eight playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Espio, Fang the Sniper, Bean, and Bark. Opposite them are two non-playable bosses: Metal Sonic (the final boss) and Dr. Eggman.

Bark, Bean, and Honey Debut Here
Sonic the Fighters is a game of firsts: it is here that Bark the Polar Bear and Bean the Dynamite first appear, accompanied by Honey the Cat. A small clarification about Honey: she is actually derived from Honey, a character created for Fighting Vipers (1995); originally, she was not playable in Sonic the Fighters—hidden in the game's code and accessible only through unconventional means. (And no, contrary to popular belief, Fang does not debut here: he already existed since 1994.)

Gameplay and the Shield
The game uses the fighting engine from Fighting Vipers (1995). Its signature mechanic is the shield (barrier): a limited defense that can be damaged and then destroyed, and which can also be "spent" to enter Hyper Mode.
🤖 The final boss obviously has his profile: (re)discover Metal Sonic.
The 2012 Re-release
Long confined to arcades, the game received an HD re-release in 2012 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Good news: this version finally makes Metal Sonic, Dr. Eggman, and Honey the Cat playable, who were previously inaccessible.
