LevelSonic 3Angel Island
The third zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in February 1994, Marble Garden spreads sun-drenched Greco-Roman ruins across Angel Island. Its gimmick lies in the blue spinning tops, which slowly lift you towards the high platforms as long as you do not change direction. The tour covers its two bosses: the Tunnelbot, which drills through the ceiling to rain down rubble and stalactites, then the Egg Drillster Mk. II, a rare aerial fight in which Tails physically carries Sonic. The only zone in the game without water or drowning, it is packed with giant rings leading to the Special Stages.
Summary
Marble temples bathed in sunlight, blue spinners that make Sonic fly, and a boss that is battled… in the air: Marble Garden Zone is one of the brightest levels in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. A tour of Angel Island's ancient ruins.
🦊 This zone features Tails — (re)discover the story of Tails.
The Ancient Ruins of Sonic 3
Marble Garden Zone is the 3rd zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (February 1994) — not to be confused with Marble Zone, the 2nd zone of Sonic 1. These are ancient stone and marble ruins on Angel Island: Greco-Roman architecture, colonnades, green grass, and parallax backgrounds.
💎 These ruins belong to the floating island: (re)read the Master Emerald that makes Angel Island fly.

The Blue Spinners
The emblematic gimmick: the rotating blue spinners. You jump on them and, by running, slowly make them levitate upwards to reach high platforms — delicate piloting, as changing direction makes them descend. They are also used to dash at high speed on the ground.

A Boss in the Air
Both bosses are memorable. In Act 1, the Tunnelbot drills through the ceiling with its drills, showering rubble and stalactites. But it's Act 2 that stands out: the Egg Drillster Mk. II is fought in the air — one of the rare aerial bosses in the Mega Drive trilogy, where Tails physically carries Sonic in flight to hit Eggman.
A Unique Zone
Two unique features make Marble Garden a standout in Sonic 3. It's the only zone in the game without water or drowning (although tar pits can trap the player). And it's known for its high concentration of giant rings leading to Special Stages — a great way to collect Chaos Emeralds.
Its Reappearances
Marble Garden is an integral part of Sonic 3 & Knuckles (1994) after the lock-on, with an adapted Knuckles campaign. It then reappears in all classic compilations, up to Sonic Origins (2022).
