Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

Sonic the Hedgehog was released in France on February 12, 2020 (February 14 in the United States). It tells the story of Sonic's arrival on Earth, forced to hide, then hunted by the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik. To escape him, the hedgehog teams up with Sheriff Tom Wachowski.

The Controversy of the First Design

The film was initially scheduled for release on November 8, 2019. However, the first trailer, revealing a Sonic with a face deemed too human, caused an uproar among fans. On May 2, 2019, Jeff Fowler announced that the character would be completely redesigned. The redesign, entrusted to artist Tyson Hesse (familiar with the Sonic universe), required approximately five extra months of work and pushed back the release by several months.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released in France on March 30, 2022 (April 8 in the United States). This installment introduces two highly anticipated characters: Tails, the two-tailed fox, and Knuckles, the warrior echidna. Robotnik returns and this time allies with Knuckles to get his hands on the Master Emerald, a stone of colossal power.

For Tails' voice, the production brought in Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who already voices the character in the video games. Idris Elba, meanwhile, plays Knuckles. The Knuckles Series (2024)

Between the second and third films, a spin-off series, Knuckles, was released on Paramount+ starting April 27, 2024 in France. This six-episode mini-series, the first live-action production in the Sonic universe, follows the echidna tasked (despite himself) with training Deputy Wade Whipple.

Idris Elba reprises his role as Knuckles and Adam Pally as Wade, surrounded by guest stars such as Christopher Lloyd and Cary Elwes. Sonic and Tails make brief vocal appearances.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released in the United States on December 20, 2024 (with a preview in London on December 10), arriving in theaters at the end of 2024. This is the darkest and most ambitious installment of the saga: it introduces Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced in the original version by Keanu Reeves.

The film is largely inspired by the game Sonic Adventure 2: we discover Shadow's past, the space station ARK, and the scientist Gerald Robotnik — a supporting role entrusted to Jim Carrey, who thus plays both Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (2027)

The saga does not end there: a fourth film is officially in preparation. Initially announced for March 2027, it is now expected in December 2027. Filming wrapped in spring 2026, and voice recording followed shortly after.

According to the information provided, Sonic 4 will be inspired by the game Sonic CD and will feature the arrival of Amy Rose, whose original voice has been entrusted to Kristen Bell.
