LevelSonic 3Death Egg
A setting of concrete and pipelines raised on Angel Island around the wreck of the Death Egg: this is the sixth and last zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (February 1994) played on its own. Cogwheels acting as lifts, retractable spikes, conveyor belts and water tunnels make up the trap. Act 1 pits Sonic against the Twin Hammer; Act 2 strings together the Egg Cannon, the Egg Rocket and then the Big Arm, the first boss in the series able to hurt Super Sonic despite his invincibility, through a programming oversight. Eggman gets the repaired Death Egg airborne again here.
Summary
An industrial base by the water, a cascade of bosses, and the return of a spatial threat: Launch Base Zone closes Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in grand style. A look at the grand finale.
🥚 The entire zone revolves around Eggman's space station: (re)discover the Death Egg.
The Final Level of Sonic 3
Launch Base Zone is the 6th and final zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (February 1994), in solo. It is an industrial and military base of Eggman built on Angel Island, by the water, around the wreckage of the Death Egg which crashed there at the end of Sonic 2.

A Trapped Industrial Base
The concrete and pipeline scenery is full of traps: large rotating cogwheels serving as elevators (the signature gimmick), retractable spikes springing from walls, conveyor belts, alarms that trigger defenses, and water tunnels.

The Bosses and the Big Arm
Launch Base strings together confrontations. Act 1 pits Sonic against the Twin Hammer (a spiked arm machine). Act 2 unfurls a true climax: the Egg Cannon, then the Egg Rocket, and finally the famous Big Arm (sometimes "Big Arms"), the final boss of standalone Sonic 3, a mechanical arm that grabs Sonic and throws him (8 hits). A funny detail: the Big Arm is the first boss in the series capable of damaging Super Sonic even when invincible—a simple programming oversight.
The Death Egg Relaunches
Script-wise, Launch Base is the culmination: Eggman has repaired the Death Egg there to relaunch it, while manipulating Knuckles. Sonic catches up with him at the moment of launch. Note: in the Sonic 3 & Knuckles compilation, only Knuckles confronts the Big Arm; for Sonic, the adventure continues directly with the next part, Sonic & Knuckles.
🥊 The guardian manipulated by Eggman has his own profile: (re)discover the history of Knuckles.
Its Reappearances
Launch Base returns in Sonic Generations (3DS version, 2011) as a boss level in the classic era, where Classic Sonic re-fights the Big Arm. The zone is also present in Sonic Origins (2022) — where its music, linked to the controversy over the Sonic 3 soundtrack, has been replaced.
